The Hands, 2011.

Chico Hands Photo Project

Updated March 26, 2022.

The Chico Hands photo project is my view of the wonderful art installation, commonly known as ‘The Hands’, or ‘Chico Hands’. My first image of the hands came over a decade after they were installed. The black and white image above was captured in 2011. I was on my way to photograph a music performance when I realized I simply needed to capture any image, instead of waiting for a great one. It was an ice-breaker photo to get this simple project started, and it worked! The Hands are located on 4th Street at Wall Street on city property housing the municipal building

The artist, Donna Billick, created an inviting, yet larger than life (6′ x 12′), sculpture the public can interact with. I love this art piece, and only wish it weren’t located so close to the street, and in a more inviting locale than next to a parking lot. A location more central in a public space, such as a park, would certainly have many more people interacting with it. But alas the economic driver creating it came from the financing of the, then new, city building. So, at least we have The Hands to celebrate!

This photo project is simply to capture The Chico Hands at different times and seasons, with and without people, moons or not, over time and space.
